Race to Anyplace Preliminary Results & What to Expect In Class Moving Forward

The Space Monkey Mafia is victorious again! Congratulations and thank you to all those who rode with the Space Monkey Mafia & the Space Monkey Mafia JV. The race team officially took first place in the "Spin Open" Division with 221.31 miles and while the other results have not yet been posted on the race website, we believe the JV team took third place with 199.02 miles. That is the best JV showing ever!

Stay tuned for a full race report once final results are posted on the event website. The report will include distance by rider, a comparison to last year, pictures, video & more!

Race to Anyplace & The Upcoming Week

New Blog Page!
Take a quick look at the upper right hand side of the page right now. There's a new section titled "NEW Gear I Use." I often get asked "what kind of shoes are good for spinning," or "what type of heart rate monitor should I buy."

Well wonder no more my friends! If I use it, and think its worthy of telling you about, I'll add it to this section of my blog! If you've found something that you think works particularly well, let me know and it might make the cut too!

Here is a quick look at the training we'll do the rest of this week and next. Also, there are a few extra details that I sent in an email to the team, if you didn't receive that email, please give this a quick look over.

Other Need to Knows

First, Get Registered!

To officially register, click here!

Reserve Your Ride Time, Pick Which Team You Want to Ride On & Set a Mileage Goal!

What time do you want to ride? Click here, or on the link below to access the online race roster spreadsheet. You can also let me know what time you would like to ride at Spin class if you prefer. Once you log on, type your name in one of the open, yellow boxes to sign up for your first shift (your name will automatically populate in the appropriate space for your second shift).

Also, if someone has taken a time that you need, please email me and I'll see what we can do to shift the schedule around. Most of us are pretty flexible on the times that we can ride.

You'll also have to choose which team you want to put your name on. The Race Team is on the left of the page & the JV/fun team in on the right. If you're still unsure which team you want, give the next paragraph a read. I might also shift some names around depending.

Picking your Team & Setting Your Goal

In order to be competitive, each rider on the Race team needs to average around 10.8 miles during each 15 minute shift. That means when we do cadence checks during class, you should be consistently maintaining 16 to feel confident on race day.

When your cadence check = 12 you will ride a total of 7.5 miles in 15 minutes. That increases by .5 miles for every +1 you add to that 12. So, if you're averaging 16 on your cadence checks, you can expect to go 9.5 miles. That puts you one mile away from where I said you needed to be on race day, but don't stress that extra mile, its usually pretty easy to achieve with the adrenaline that you'll have going.

Don't Forget Your Donation!
Remember, we are asking each team member to raise or donate $50. This goes to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society which is a great organization. Also, please keep in mind that  most major corporations match employee donations. If you work for a company that does, please request the match & let me know that you've done this so I can inform the Race Organizers that we have extra donations coming in!

Week of February 10, the Race to Anyplace & My Favorite Podcasts

It looks like we've got somewhat of a regular week lined up, although we'll be doing some major Race to Anyplace training throughout the week. We'll probably also get at least one heavy Race to Anyplace day in the following week, but won't want to over do it so that our legs are fresh for Saturday, February 23. More on what the week will look like & what our team looks like below!

Get Some Good Info!

While I realize most readers of this blog simply log on to check the weekly spinning schedule, check for any substitute teachers or cancelled classes, etc., every now and then I do try to add some helpful tips, observations, or other ramblings. This falls into that category!

One of the many reasons I love my iPhone is the Podcast store. I've been downloading and listening to Podcasts for the past several years on my old school iPod, but with my phone, it's never been easier to get alternative perspectives and insightful information.

Over my next few posts, I'll try to give you a brief review of each of the Podcasts I listen to, what I like about them, and the info you can expect if you tune in. The subjects covered in each show I listen vary, but I promise you they are all extremely motivating.

Here's the screen shot from my iPhone. Stay tuned for reviews!

Spin Schedule
Monday -LA Fitness @ 5:45 am
Tuesday - Rivers Club @ Lunch
Wednesday -LA Fitness @ 5:45 am, Rivers Club @ Lunch
Friday -LA Fitness @ 5:45 am -Race to Anyplace Race Rehearsal will start early at 5:15 am and I'll actually be on the bike at 5 to do some easy warm up riding. During the rehearsal we'll ride for 15 minutes, all out, then take 15 minutes off the bike, then get back on for 15 minutes. If you're not racing with us, no worries, you'll get a good workout too (without the 15 minute break!).
