Weekly Schedule and Indoor Training

We are definitely rolling into a rough patch of the year in terms of training. Sure, the gyms will be packed in January, but for those of us who have been consistently training through the Spring, Summer and Fall, Winter often tends to slow us down.

Blame it on the early darkness, cold weather, holiday parties, or just flat out seasonal depression. If you're like me, you'll find yourself regularly skipping lunch time runs or other workouts. So, how do can we combat this winter slump? Here are a few tactics I plan to employ.

  1. Look for alternative workouts. Maybe a yoga class, crossfit workout, snowboarding, kettle bell class, or anything else you wouldn't normally do.
  2. Sign up for a Winter race (like the Race to Anyplace) or early Sprint race (like the marathon). This will keep you motivated and having something to train toward.
  3. Don't let your indoor workouts (spinner/bike trainer, treadmill, elliptical, or other cardio) get boring! Sure, it might be cool to listen to a some tunes on your first few workouts, or watch a movie, but shake it up a bit. Get some cycling videos, find some treadmill workouts, and check out this article for some great ideas.
  4. Keep your friends motivated. Post your workouts on Facebook, comment on workouts your friends have posted. We need to get through the cold and dark together!
