Ringing in the New Year!

Well, here we are at the end of 2012! How did you do with your resolutions from last year? Will you be rebooting any of them for 2013 or coming up with a new set?

If you didn't get a chance to see my post from last year, "F Your Resolutions," check it out. The info in it is still good and it's a nice reminder on how you can take a solid approach at setting some real goals for the upcoming year.

Just like last week, the schedule will be a bit screwy since we are in holiday mode. Check out the details at the end of this blog post to make sure the class you attend is still scheduled.

    The Space Monkey Mafia Online Store, Race to Anyplace 2012, Weekly Schedule & More!


    Merry Christmas! I hope everyone enjoyed last weeks LA Fitness Christmas party & the Christmas tunes on Tuesday's Rivers Club class. With Christmas coming up this week, the schedule is a bit off. Just because there are canceled classes, doesn't mean you should take off! I'd encourage you to get up and do something active this week in place of your normal workout. Maybe it'll be the P90X DVD's Santa brought you, sledding with the kids, boarding at 7 Springs, or something else. Regardless, get out there!

      Merry Mayan Apocalypse Christmas!

      Who would have guessed that the Mayan Apocalypse is only five short days away! To help you prepare for the event we'll feature songs in class this week that have an 'end of the world' kind of feel to them. Feel free to shot a request or two my way.

      On the off chance that the world doesn't end Friday, we'll hold our annual LA Fitness Christmas party featuring Jack's energy 'shots,' merry mimosas, and other holiday goodies. There will be plenty of Christmas themed music during class (I promise it'll be all awesome stuff). Some of those tunes will be incorporated into Tuesday afternoons class at the Rivers Club as well (I will not be teaching on Wednesday at the RC, but Nancy is subbing).

      Check out my schedule below, and if you plan on coming to Friday's party, feel free to bring your favorite holiday treat to share (but don't feel like you have to bring anything, we'd just love to see you show up and enjoy the ride!).

      Race to Anyplace Update

        Week of December 10th


        It's hard to believe, but we are training for the Race to Anyplace! If you've missed the blog post earlier in the week, take a look at it now. Over the next few months we will take some time out of our classes to specifically train for this event. Don't worry if you're not up for the race, our training classes will be flexible enough for those who are not doing the race to still get a great workout!

        New Calorie Counter
        You may have noticed that I've added a new calorie counter to the tools section of this blog. If your wearing a heart rate monitor during class, this is a great way to see how many calories you're actually burning. The calculator uses your average heart rate, plus the time of your workout to get a fairly accurate count. I hope to get other useful tools up in this section soon!

        Retierment from Tuesday Night Spin
        Well it's official, I'm stepping away from my Tuesday night spin class at LA Fitness. It was a hard decision, but I have to be sure to keep a balance between work, training, and family. Ed will be taking over so the class will live on!

        Race to Anyplace with the Space Monkey Mafia!




        Race To Anyplace
        It's hard to believe that the 2013 Race to Anyplace is right around the corner! Once again, the Space Monkey Mafia will participate with two teams (the Space Monkey Mafia & the Space Monkey Mafia JV). Last year, the Space Monkey Mafia took first place in the YMCA division, and the Space Monkey Mafia JV team wasn't far behind.

        This year, we are looking at moving into the Open Division, which will be more competitive. Just like last year, all team members will register under the Space Monkey Mafia main team. Over the next several months, we'll train together, get fast, then decide which riders would prefer to remain on the 'speed' team, and which riders prefer to move to the JV team (who will ride at a less competitive/'for fun' pace).

        I am asking that each rider pledge to donate, or raise $50. This will cover the cost of the bikes for the race ($500 each) and it is going to a great cause. You WILL NOT have to make any donation when you register, you're simply pledging to make the donation at a later time, or raise that money from your network of family & friends.

        Jaxon Kasey Presutti is here!

        Jaxon has arrived! You've probably figured that out by now since I haven't been around for the past few weeks, but I'm happy to say that after 22 hours of labor, and ultimately a C-Section, baby & mom are doing great!

        Of course, Jaxon's arrival means some changes to my routine, and that includes workouts. I was originally scheduled to take off last week and this week, however it looks like LA Fitness didn't get the message, so I'm going to suck it up and truck it in tomorrow morning & Friday morning to teach class.

        As of now, I'm not planning any major changes to Spinning schedules, either at LA Fitness or the Rivers Club, but I won't be showing up early to LA Fitness right now for strength workouts. That may eventually change, but for now, no commitments.

        So, that's the general plan through the end of February. After that time, Kelly will be back to work and my mornings will get more hectic with having to drop Jax of at daycare. It's likely at that point I'll be dropping Monday & Wednesday morning Spin classes at LA Fitness. I'm going to try my hardest to keep Friday and possibly add a Thursday morning, but I will obviously keep everyone up to date. The good news for you LA Fitness goers, Janice is working on getting certified and I'm guessing she'll be taking over Monday & Wednesdays!

        Well, that's it for now peeps. Like I said, I'll be back at the Rivers Club for regular classes next week & covering my LA classes this week and for the foreseeable future.

        Week of November 11th

        Alright team, here is the plan for this week. A few things that I'd like to point out. I didn't just copy and paste this schedule... All these plans are accurate!

        Also, as most of the group knows...Kelly & I have a baby on the way! What does that mean for our current workout schedules. Well, as of know, I'm planning on taking the first week after the baby arrives off from all gym action...that includes classes at LA Fitness & the Rivers Club.

        After the first week, I will definitely be back at the Rivers Club and will plan on returning to Spin Classes at LA Fitness, although I will likely only be teaching classes and not showing up early for strength training. After Kelly is back to work in March, I'm not sure what mornings at LA will look like, but they will probably be much less frequent (stay tuned for more details!).

        This weeks plan!

        On an effort to get the weekly update out before the week starts, I'm posting from my iPhone, so please excuse any typos...this is a small keyboard.

        Since I'll be running mud on the mountain this weekend, I'm planning for a pretty mild workout week.

        Spin Classes
        -I will be teaching all regularly scheduled spin classes this week except for Wednesday at the Rivers Club.
        -We'll be doing a Halloween class and party at LA Fitness on Wednesday morning and Ill also be doing the Halloween class on Tuesday at LA Fitness and on Tuesday at the Rivers Club.

        Strength Training
        -Because of the upcoming race I will be going easy this week
        -Spartacus 3 on Tuesday
        -Core on Wednesday
        -Stretching on Friday
        -No strength on Monday or Thursday

        Into October!

        I love being a bakner! We'll, I love working in banking I should say (they don't let me touch the money). I'm off on a long, Columbus day weekend, so I won't be around the gym Monday morning. The rest of the week however looks pretty standard as far as Spin classes go. For the other morning workouts, we're going to play it by ear this week. I'll definitely be in for them, we'll just wait to see what we feel like doing each morning.

        I promise to bring a little more structure to the AM workouts again soon!

        Running "Mud on the Mountain", Week of 8/26


        Great news, I've cleared November 3rd's "Mud on the Mountain" race at 7 Springs with my Sports Manager, signed up & paid! I've been looking for something else to actually train for so am super stoked about this race.

        I have a few friends also singed up, including my brother in law, so if you're thinking about doing it, let me know! It's a 7ish mile run with 20 obstacles. I'll be tailoring our morning workouts to help me train for the race and the obstacles on it.

        If you've been following the P90X schedule we have been working on, then you know last week was the end! The plan is to take this week as somewhat of a 'rest week,' mixing in the Spartacus workout on Tuesday & Thursday. We'll also do a core workout Wednesday at 5am, and I may show up for spin just a bit early to do some bench press & pull ups (got to keep up the intensity now that Mud on the Mountain is in the future).

        We will break into the "Insanity" workout in about two weeks. For now, here's what this week looks like.

        This Weeks Plan (August 13-18)

        Sorry for not posting last week. Here is this weeks plan! We are almost finished with the P90X routine and the plan is going to be to move onto Insanity next! We may take a week off, then do a week of Spartacus 2.0 before starting, but details are on the way.

        Awesome Salsa Recipe
        On a side note, if you're looking to make a killer salsa for your next picnic, give this a try (I had it today and it was awesome). Cut up small cubes of avocado and mango, mix it up with some fresh cilantro (and add some jalapeno if you want a kick). That's it, delicious!

        This Week's Plan


        The Olympics kicked off in London last Friday with a pretty crazy opening ceremony and while I won't be pulling music from that spectacle into spin class this week, I will be sampling songs that have an Olympic, kick ass feel to them!

        Rest week from P90X is also over and we'll be back at it hard starting tomorrow. I also think that on Tuesday we'll work in some heavy bag work. That was pretty cool last week and I'd like to get into it a bit more. Anyway, here's the plan!

        P90X Rest Week & Spin Schedule



        It looks like the Tour de France has finally come to an end! It was an awesome race this year & thanks to everyone who participated in the spin classes over the past three weeks that mirrored the Tour stages. We might just have to break out that plan again in the near future. There were some great workouts associated with it & if you are an outdoor rider, the past 3 weeks gave you a taste of how you should be training when you're indoors! Look back through some of the previous weeks posts for more on that program (including instructions on how to download it for free into Training Peaks).

         For those following the P90X program with me take note that this week is a recovery week. The actual program calls for working in YogaX, Stretching, and a few other cardio routines with "Core Synergistics."  I'm planning a Core workout Tuesday & Thursday. The other days I plan on running.         Although I'm still off from my day job this Monday, I love my LA Fitness crew so much that instead of sleeping in I've decided to get up early and come to class! And I would never miss tomorrow since we've been doing our Tour de France and we're set for Stage 9! During class we'll hit a quick warm up, and then we're in Zone 4 for 2, 15 minute intervals!         This Weeks Schedule & Tour de France @ "LA Fitness," french for "The Fitness"


        Wow, I have been feeling fantastic since focusing on riding in Zone 2 & beginning P90X 4 weeks ago. I can tell that my body fat percentage is down, my endurance is up, and my energy is fantastic.

        On top of that, I'm pumped that the Tour de France has started and the Olympic trials are on every night. The weather has been awesome over the past few weekends and I've been talking full advantage. With the upcoming holiday, I'm going to try to get a ride or run in outside every day starting on Wednesday. Feel free to hit me up if you want to tag along.

        Stage profileOver the next 3 weeks I'm planning on mimicking the stages of the Tour de France each day in class. Check back here for an update on what you can expect to see in Spin class. We will start out on Monday with Stage 2 of the Tour. This stage features fairly flat ground, one Cat 4 climb & a fast finish. We'll ride the first 15 minutes of class in Zone 2, move onto a steep 4 minute climb, return to zone 2, then finish with a 12 to 15 minute, all out push!

        Ride the Tour de France Starting Monday!

        This is pretty cool! FasCat Coaching has put together a free plan (accessible in Training Peaks) that mimics the terrain, speed, and energy zones that the Tour de France riders can expect to hit throughout this years tour.

        Week of 6/3, Burnout & P90X!


        Back after the holiday week, sorry for no blog post last week.

        Okay, I'm making some changes in my line up. I have to get back to some strength training but am also trying to walk a fine line between just enough training and burnout. On Tuesday for instance, I went crazy hard on my swim, Rivers Club Spin, and LA Fitness Spin. When Wednesday came around I was dead. Didn't want lift in the morning, didn't want to spin. I was so beat that I didn't even want to go to work.

        With that in mind, I think this new schedule will work out pretty well. Most Spin classes I will plan to ride in "Zone 2." If you see an * next to one of the classes, it means I plan on going above Zone 2.

        As for the strength training, I'm going to go back to P90X in the mornings at the gym. I won't follow their program exactly. The swimming, biking and running that I do will make up for the cardio that I'm going to skip in their program. Also, due to the lack of time in the morning, I'm not going to do the "Ab Ripper X" routine that the program has lined up after each but will try to do it at least 3 times per week. Its also likely that I won't use the actual P90X DVDs in the gym. I' will just take their moves and adapt them.

        Anyone is welcome to join the P90X routine in the gym. The 90 in it means that it's a 90 day program. The routine switches up every few weeks so you get the benefit of "continuous muscle confusion!" (Okay, that's just the catchy term they use to sell their program, but I wanted to throw it at you anyway because it sounds cool).

        Anyway, I hope you'll join me for the P90X. As mentioned, I won't do the cardio piece of it but I'm willing to lend out the cardio DVDs if anyone is interested.

        I will not be teaching at the Rivers Club this Tuesday. I will work to find a sub, but Dale has already said that he can't do it. If I'm unable to find someone, I recommend jumping on a bike anyway, cranking up the music, and riding like crazy!

        Race to Any Place 2012 –Race Report

        Who remembers that little thing we did in February called the Race to Anyplace? I know it's been awhile since I said the race report would be up, but after all that time…here it is!

        Race to Anyplace 2012 Race Report

        No matter how well the Space Monkey Mafia prepares each year, there is always something that surprises us. Last year we showed up in the morning and found out that we had been placed in the wrong division. The petals on our bike did not have clips and we spent a desperate half hour trying to find a set that did. Once we were on the bikes moving we noticed that our computer was displaying kilometers per hour instead of miles per hour!

        This year I promised the team that I would get a head start and scope out the venue the day before. When I go to the Steel Towner on Friday afternoon, the YMCA bikes were set up. I found our two, saw the petals were correct, computers were working and headed home.

        When I arrived in the morning, the other bikes had been set up and they were all CycleOps! This was not good, since my goal was to get more mileage than any other team there (not just in our division). The problem is that the CycleOps bikes do not have a locked in wheel, meaning that someone can petal as hard as they can, then stop and let the wheel coast for awhile, then kick back in with the pedaling. This is great for true cyclists trying to mimic training on the road, but not so good for races like this. You can't really compare the results from a fixed wheel bike (like the one our teams used) to those of a free wheel.

        At that point, we decided to focus solely on winning the division, which we did!

        I had mapped out the goal distances and speeds that each team member need to ride in order for us to reach a mileage that I thought would be sufficient for victory. The only trouble was that the computers on our bikes didn't show miles per hour. No problem, I thought, they do show RPM and that is actually what we trained off of. So, when Jack go on of his first ride and all of a sudden we didn't see RPMs, I didn't know what to think!

        It turns out that after a certain RPM level is reached (140) the computer tells you to slow down! The idea being that you would never ride at such a high cadence in real life, so you really shouldn't be riding that high on a spin bike (unless of course doing a race like the Race to Any Place). At that point the rule became "just don't let any numbers show up on the computer." –Jack was on hand to enforce that rule.

        During the race, things went extremely well for both teams. Here is a quick overview.

        Space Monkey Mafia Elite

        I killed it again this year, putting up a total of 24.2 miles (but what else would you expect?). Chuck was right behind me mileage wise at 22.7, followed by Nate at 22.2 (then went for a short 20 mile run in North Park). Alan, who was pulled in from the Rivers Club for the first time this year, and Lia from LA Fitness both put up 22 miles. Most of us said that it felt easier the second time, however looking at the numbers below it was apparent that we all slowed down on our second leg. Jody was the only one to move faster and I assume that Jack was in front of her yelling the entire time! Maybe next year we will experiment with putting a half hour between rides and see if that impacts each rider's first distance vs. second distance.

        I'd like to also call out Vicki, Jack, Nicole, Mia, Gary & Amy for putting up some impressive numbers that help drive us to victory!

        Space Monkey Mafia (JV)

        How crazy is it that this year's JV team put up more mileage than last year's elite team? Must be the kick ass training they received in Spin class (let's be honest, it's the only plausible explinatoin).

        Most of our JV team riders matched the distances of the elite team riders! The chart below only shows the riders who did two legs or more on the JV team. Check out Gary H who rode a total of 4 legs and put up 20.5 miles on the first two, and a total of 20.1 miles on the last two. Nice work bro!

        Pete lead the pack with 21.5 miles, followed by Nicole (who had already rode for the Elite team), then Jack (also coming of an Elite team ride), Janice, Kelly, Pradip & Pat. I'd like to point out that both Janice & Kelly said something along the lines of "we're just doing this for fun right?" Well, thanks to some pressure from the team (and Jack), they both turned up the heat!

        All in all, every member of our teams put up more average miles than anyone else in the race. Pradip & Pat had very impressive rides as well and I hope everyone who competed this year will be back next year!

        Final Results

        The Elite team took first place in the YMCA division, finally beating the Penn Hills team by about 4 miles. Our JV team came in 4th place out of 10 total teams. Again, it's hard to compare overall times because of the difference in bikes. Westinghouse1 took first place in the Spin Open Division with 269.6 miles, but had our team ridden on the independent wheel bikes it wouldn't have even been close!

        Thanks again to everyone who raced. We raised nearly $2,000 for the cause and I can't wait to start training for next year's race!
